After completing their home office/ guest room the previous year, I and L were happy enough with the results to invite us into their North Vancouver home again. They were now looking at outfitting their master bedroom with new furniture that would increase both the beauty and usefulness of the space. We started with a new custom king size bed. With the footprint a bed this size normally occupies, there isn’t much room left over for additional storage. We solved this problem by utilizing hydraulically lifted kangaroo bed hardware that let the clients easily lift their 150 lb mattress up to access the massive amount of storage beneath. This hardware also allows them to raise the mattress up to a higher completely horizontal position to aid in the daily chore of making the bed or changing the sheets.
To keep the mass of such a large piece of furniture from dominating the room, we elevated it on a kick which we set back to make the huge bed appear to be floating above the ground. To aid in the illusion, we added a dimmable linear lighting accent to the underside of the bed. The bed appears formidable yet light as air.
Across from the bed we added a few more of our NEXUS units to give them some more organized storage and some lit display shelving. The NEXUS units were repeats of what we used in their guest room to aesthetically link the two rooms together.
The king size bed had a custom oak headboard with built in storage for reading material, as well as two integrated nightstands for their reading lamps and assorted bedtime necessities.
Like in their home office, the ultra matte black and white laminates that we used for most of the millwork were given some warmth with the addition of white oak elements throughout. The oak headboard provides a focal point reflected in the lit up oak backed display shelving. Seeing a cohesive aesthetic start to take shape in the house was very pleasing to us as well as the clients. An additional black low chest added in their entryway brought the look out even further. It all adds up to a very clean and considered approach to furnishing a home with form and function interweaving through the whole of their home.
