After over 12 years of working with clients to realize their personal visions, we here at Anthill have learned a thing or two about custom built-in millwork. Firstly, people’s needs are as individual as they are. We have thus learned many differing types of design strategies necessary to help them achieve their goal of a more organized and beautiful home life. We have also seen what transformation a well designed unit can bring to a space. Whether adding an extra bed when needed, or organizing all your objects and displaying the ones you love the most, good furniture design can change how we inhabit and enjoy a space, providing satisfaction on many levels. However, with all the individual problems we encountered, certain universal needs emerged and certain trends became apparent; we are human, after all. Certain designs became more and more popular, with clients asking, “Can I get one of those too?”
We began to ask ourselves if there was a better way for most than the drawn out and costly custom route, one that gave them virtually all of the benefits of custom design without any of the drawbacks. What if you could match your needs to products with a diverse range of functions and forms that could be sized to your particular space? And not just roughly sized to fit, but precisely tailored to your exact dimensions, fitting like a good suit?
Welcome to NEXUS.
NEXUS allows you to utilize your space your way. Its diverse range allows you to cater your NEXUS unit exactly to your individual needs. Whether you need more storage space, sleeping space, working space, or just space to display your favourite things, NEXUS has you covered. Each unit can be precisely dimensioned as well so that it will fit your space perfectly. Your bookshelf can be 12” wide or 19-23/32” wide, it’s your call. NEXUS can take up as little or as much of your wall as you like. It can even turn corners and go under or over windows and doors. You also pick the finishes and not just for the overall unit. You can customize each aspect of your NEXUS wall as well. Gables, doors, shelves, backs, edges - these can each be made in a variety of different materials and you can mix and match materials to achieve a highly personalized result. Nobody knows your space and your style better than you, so who better than you to design it?
Coming from Vancouver, we are all too familiar with the pressures of modern day life and how that affects the spaces we inhabit. With rapidly rising real estate costs and urban densification, we are constantly being asked to do more with less. As our spaces shrink, we must adapt and apply a novel approach to both interior and furniture design. Organization and allowing for rooms that serve multiple purposes becomes a key component in this approach. Clutter and non-essential design flourishes are to be avoided. With our wallbed system, we have taken one of the most space-hungry pieces of furniture we own and made it disappear with ease, opening up the room to a variety of other uses. Add in NEXUS’ storage, surface, and wardrobe systems and you have the flexibility necessary to make your rooms work for you just how you need them to all within a unified design framework.
With NEXUS Link, we have added a whole range of new design possibilities by simply taking each of our NEXUS units and breaking them down into their individual functional components. This gives you the ability to add to your NEXUS unit without adding another whole full height extension. Playing with the depths and heights, allowing you to go under, over, and around doors and windows, gives you much more variety and versatility in the design. Thinking of a full height NEXUS unit as being comprised of 6 parts, you can now have 1, 2, or 3 of those parts on their own and attach them to a full height piece, to each other, or even use them individually.
NEXUS is designed locally, and manufactured locally. There are many reasons why we at Anthill choose to make all of our products here, in house, in Vancouver. Not only is it a fundamental part of our ethos, having our manufacturing facilities under the same roof allows us to have the utmost in quality control too. From grading sheets of veneer to inspecting sheets of plywood, every detail is examined and only the best goods and processes are used in creating your Nexus product. Having production in house also allows for a quick turnaround on your project. Once a design is approved, we can start manufacture almost immediately and your Nexus unit can be ready soon, rather than waiting for it to ship from abroad. It also allows you to see how your furniture is being made, and by whom. The benefits extend to the community, the economy, and the environment too, making the decision to be local and buy local an easy one to make.
At ANTHILL, we are committed to quality. That starts with materials. We long ago discarded the use of particle board, which is unfortunately the standard nowadays in casework. We believe in using only good quality domestic or imported European plywoods for many reasons. They are much stronger and lighter than particle board, they don’t chip as easily, they hold screws and nails much more strongly, and lastly, they don’t act like a sponge and swell up when exposed to water or humidity. Although this is true of all plywoods versus their particle board counterparts, there is a difference between plywoods as well. Better plywoods are composed of better quality plys devoid of knots, voids, and imperfections that can telegraph through the surface or lead to the mechanical failure of screws and fasteners. They are also of a more uniform thickness, which makes a huge difference when joining multiple units together into larger structures as little variations can add up over many units and cause pieces to be misaligned and ill fitting.
Combining our top quality Euro Birch Plywood with Lamello’s Clamex detachable furniture fittings, we are able to achieve gable sharing between any two modules. Shared gables allow for reduction in visual clutter and unnecessary material in a unit, while maintaining the structural stability. It also helps the unit appear as a cohesive structure rather than a collection of disparate parts. Thinning down the gables also allows you to gain more usable space, which is what NEXUS is all about.
We make all ANTHILL products using premium materials. Only select Baltic birch plywood is sourced for all structural components. This exceptionally stable and robust material is dressed with your choice of Primary White, hand-oiled genuine Wood Veneers or anti-fingerprint Ultra Matte Laminates. Hardwood or HPL-matched edging is added for edge protection from the knocks of everyday living.
You may choose a different finish for each of your furniture or custom millwork pieces. Play with the options - have fun creating a personalized space you'll stay engaged with for years to come.
Unlike the process for custom millwork, which is usually much more drawn out, the design for a whole wall can now come together with remarkable ease and speed. The modular nature of NEXUS also means that the design can be easily reconfigured and resized to fully integrate with a space. Further, the system is easily assembled, taken apart, and re-assembled (eg. when moving to a new home) without compromising the structural connections. The robust birch plywood construction, high quality hardware, and top grade workmanship ensure NEXUS products will last a lifetime. Our warranty is proof of that.
