We were asked to outfit NH’s new condo with two new beds, one for his guest room, and one for his master bedroom. The condo had great views and location but was really short on space. The guest room would have to serve double duty as a home office, so a NEXUS Eddy Desk was proposed. This freed up his floorspace and gave him a work surface to use when necessary. We added some elegance to the cost effective Primary White laminate by choosing a solid walnut trim on all the panels. This also matched his walnut flooring and gave the unit a more harmonious built-in look.
For his master bedroom, we had a different problem to solve. Namely, the odd trapezoidal shape of the room made it so that once a queen bed was brought in there was no room for any other furniture in the space. This led to a brainstorming session with the client as to options to increase storage without shrinking bed size. We decided to lift the bed up on a platform and build a couple of steps up to access it. We incorporated a small dresser under the bed and even made each step an easily accessible storage bin. The bed frame was also attached with two high strength hydraulic struts allowing it to be easily lifted to access the mountain of storage underneath. Just as in the guest bedroom’s wallbed, the Primary White panels were edged in solid walnut. The upper part of the bed was constructed of walnut panels as well.
With the platform bed to be built above existing baseboard heaters below the windows, we needed to come up with a solution for how to safely let the heat escape and not build up under the bed. We blocked off the space between the heaters and the rest of the storage beneath the bed and fabricated a custom non-combustible Corian grill for above. This showed practical solutions could be beautiful too and provided the perfect finishing touch for this unique project.
